A Look Back at China Crisis’ Incredible Journey

Emerging in the late '70s near Liverpool, China Crisis set themselves apart in the early new romantic scene by blending melodic pop with thoughtful political commentary and bluesy reggae rhythms. The core duo of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon crafted songs that resonated far beyond their time.

Their debut single, “African and White”, arrived in 1982 and climbed the U.K. charts, laying the foundation for their rise to stardom. Their first album, Difficult Shapes & Passive Rhythms, followed later that year, with the hit single “Christian” peaking at number 12.

China Crisis solidified their success with the critically acclaimed 1983 album Working with Fire and Steel: Possible Pop Songs, Vol. 2. The record produced the unforgettable Top Ten hit “Wishful Thinking” and brought international recognition, charting in Canada and Western Europe.

The band’s third album, Flaunt the Imperfection (1985), produced by the legendary Walter Becker of Steely Dan, became their first to break into the Billboard 200 in the U.S. Featuring iconic singles like “Black Man Ray” and “King in a Catholic Style”, it became a global success, hitting the Top Ten in the U.K. and New Zealand.

Although subsequent albums like What Price Paradise? and Diary of a Hollow Horse didn’t replicate the same commercial highs, they earned critical acclaim and cemented China Crisis’ reputation as one of the most innovative acts of the '80s.

Fast forward to 2015, and the band delighted fans with their crowdfunded album Autumn in the Neighbourhood, marking their return to recording after decades of touring. Their legacy continues to thrive, with deluxe reissues like the 2017 edition of Working with Fire and Steel offering new generations a taste of their brilliance.
